What does citrus notes smell like?
A citrus accord can suggest sparkling zest, green peel, tart juice or a combination of these. Unlike a named bergamot or lemon note, it does not specify one fruit. Some interpretations are sharply refreshing; others are rounded and sweet, depending on how the perfumer builds the opening.

The material behind the impression
Citrus notes are an umbrella description, often created using several oils and aroma materials. A general label must not be expanded into a list of specific fruits without evidence. The mixed-peel image is illustrative of the family and does not declare the ingredients in any associated perfume.

Its place in the composition
Citrus makes a clear point of contrast above warm spices, resin and wood. Its brightness can frame apple or lighten an oud-led composition, even if the fresh effect is brief. Read the later notes to understand where the perfume goes rather than treating a citrus opening as a promise of lightness throughout.
