What does orris smell like?
Orris combines dry powder with a surprisingly creamy or buttery texture. Violet-like facets sit alongside earthy, root-like nuance, creating an impression that can feel both floral and restrained. It is subtler than a lush jasmine or sweet vanilla accord.

The material behind the impression
Orris is associated with prepared and aged iris rhizomes; the aromatic material is not extracted from the flower. Irone compounds contribute to the characteristic scent. Natural preparations and reconstructed effects vary, so the word orris does not establish a particular grade or extraction.

Its place in the composition
Orris can soften a floral heart and give a woody base a fine powdery finish. Rose makes its floral side clearer, sandalwood complements the creaminess and musk smooths the texture. It is a useful reference when describing a perfume as polished or suede-like rather than simply sweet.
