What does palo santo smell like?
Palo santo can suggest warm aromatic wood with a bright citrus-like edge and gentle resinous sweetness. It need not smell like burning incense. Unburned wood, oil and a reconstructed perfume accord can all create quite different impressions.

The material behind the impression
Palo santo commonly refers to Bursera graveolens, but regional common names are not a reliable species guarantee. The perfume note may be an accord. Its presence does not establish harvesting practices, sustainability certification or the use of natural oil.

Its place in the composition
Palo santo adds an aromatic counterpoint to creamy coconut and vanilla. Musk makes it softer, while citrus can emphasise the brighter facets. It often contributes to the base, lending woody texture without the heavier shadow of an oud accord.
