What does balsam smell like?
Balsam is a broad scent description associated with warm, resinous and sometimes softly sweet or aromatic effects. It need not be smoky. Without a more specific note label, it should not be equated with frankincense, benzoin, fir resin or any particular botanical balsam.

The material behind the impression
Perfumery uses several balsamic materials and recreated accords. The generic balsam label does not identify a plant species, extraction method or natural ingredient in the finished fragrance. The resin photograph is an illustrative interpretation.

Its place in the composition
Golden Vanilla lists balsam in the top notes alongside buttercream. Its resinous character offers a different texture to the creamy caramel, coconut, tonka and vanilla structure. Florals can provide a lighter counterpoint to balsamic warmth when the complete fragrances are compatible.
