What does black pepper smell like?
Black pepper feels dry, sharp and aromatic, often with a woody or lightly citrus-like lift. In perfume it is not necessarily harsh. A small accent can give definition to a soft floral or sweet base without making the fragrance smell like ground seasoning.

The material behind the impression
Black pepper is associated with dried Piper nigrum fruits. Perfumery uses oils, extracts or reconstructed effects, each with a different balance. It is distinct from pink pepper and Sichuan pepper; the shared word does not make those botanicals interchangeable.

Its place in the composition
Black pepper adds energy above woods, leather and amber. Bergamot lightens it; vanilla makes the contrast more pronounced. It can be a brief opening accent or part of a persistent spicy theme, depending on the surrounding materials.
