What does labdanum smell like?
Labdanum can feel warm, leathery and resinous, sometimes with honeyed or animalic nuances. It is a darker kind of softness than vanilla, adding shadow as well as warmth. The profile can vary from dry and textured to richly balsamic.

The material behind the impression
Labdanum is associated with resinous material from Cistus shrubs. Different extracts and fractions alter its character. A perfume note does not identify a particular process or concentration, and a resin-like image is not proof of natural material in the formula.

Its place in the composition
Labdanum is important to many amber-style constructions, but it remains a distinct note. Benzoin and vanilla soften it; incense and leather emphasise dryness. Its usual base role lends body and depth beneath fruit or floral openings.
