What does benzoin smell like?
Benzoin feels rounded, sweet and resinous, often with vanilla-like or softly powdery facets. It is usually less dark and leathery than labdanum. Its warmth can make a composition feel smooth without necessarily turning it into a strong gourmand.

The material behind the impression
Benzoin is a balsamic resin from Styrax trees, with different commercial types offering different aromatic balances. Extracts and reconstructed effects may be used. A benzoin note is not interchangeable with vanilla, even though the two can share sweet facets.

Its place in the composition
Benzoin rounds amber accords and softens oud, fruit or floral hearts. Labdanum adds shadow, vanilla emphasises sweetness and passionfruit creates contrast. It commonly supports the base, giving continuity to a fragrance as brighter notes settle.
