What does patchouli smell like?
Patchouli can be earthy and woody, with damp-leaf, camphoraceous or cocoa-like facets. Modern interpretations may feel cleaner and smoother than the familiar dense patchouli-oil reference. Its depth can add shadow to fruit or sweetness without becoming the dominant smell.

The material behind the impression
Patchouli materials come from Pogostemon cablin leaves, with drying, distillation and fractionation changing the profile. A regional note label does not certify origin, and a perfume may use an accord or selected fractions. Earthy does not mean actual soil is present.

Its place in the composition
Patchouli supplies structure beneath roses, berries, vanilla and amber. Citrus makes the contrast clearer, while musk softens the edges. Its base role is often about continuity and depth rather than simply making a perfume smell dark or heavy.
