What does sage smell like?
Sage introduces a dry, savoury kind of freshness. Its leaf-like aroma may have a camphoraceous edge and a softly woody underside, quite unlike sweet green fruit. In fragrance, that herbal structure can make a citrus opening feel more grounded and less fleeting.

The material behind the impression
Sage commonly refers to Salvia officinalis or an accord inspired by it. Clary sage, Salvia sclarea, is a distinct perfume material with a different balance of sweet, tea-like and herbal facets. A broad sage note should not be automatically translated into clary sage.

Its place in the composition
Sage works well between the opening and heart, connecting citrus to woods. Geranium makes it greener, juniper adds a crisp coniferous detail, and vetiver extends the dryness. It is often part of an aromatic fragrance rather than an obvious kitchen-herb impression.
