What does iris smell like?
Iris in perfume often suggests fine powder, soft suede and a cool violet-like floral effect. It need not smell like a fresh iris flower. Its restrained, dry character can make woods feel polished and sweet notes feel less overtly edible.

The material behind the impression
The famous natural iris material is orris, produced from processed and aged rhizomes rather than petals. An iris note can also be an accord built with ionone-like and other materials. This guide keeps the artistic iris label separate from explicitly listed orris while explaining their close relationship.

Its place in the composition
Iris supplies texture through the heart and into the base. Violet reinforces its soft floral facets, sandalwood adds creaminess and leather makes the powder feel drier. It is especially useful in compositions where quiet detail matters more than sparkling fruit or strong sweetness.
