Why Fragrance Notes Matter When Choosing Perfume

Understanding fragrance notes can make it easier to discover scents that suit your preferences.

Many perfumes are described using a three-part fragrance pyramid.

Top Notes

Top notes create the first impression of a fragrance.

They often include citrus, fruit, aromatic herbs or lighter spicy notes.

Heart Notes

Heart notes contribute to the central character of a perfume.

These may include florals, spices, aromatic materials or other distinctive accords.

Base Notes

Base notes contribute to the fragrance's later character.

Common examples include vanilla, amber, musk, woods, resins and leather-style accords.

Not every perfume develops in three clearly separated stages, but the fragrance pyramid is a useful way to understand a scent's intended structure.
